Weekly Wellness ~ Know Your Why

An estimated 45 million Americans go on a diet each year, and spend $33 billion on weight-loss products. Yet nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. There are many reasons for this disconnect, but one of the most fundamental is the emphasis on “what and how” and not on “why.”

Wellness/health companies can offer all kinds of “what” and “how” strategies and products. Diet and self-improvement books flood the market every year. Gyms are available in most neighborhoods with prices that fit most budgets.

But a fundamental, personal “WHY” cannot be bought or marketed – it must come from within.

Why is your health important to you? Why does it matter? These questions are fundamental ~ without this basic knowledge and understanding of WHY, we can’t successfully manage the “whats and hows.” Knowing the WHY brings emotion and passion into your effort to make health improvements because your WHY is linked to your values. Our values are deeply held beliefs that we feel strongly about and for which we will fight.

If your WHY is strong, the difficulty of changing old unhealthy habits into new and healthy ones will be fueled by passion and commitment.

Here is a short TED talk excerpt that brilliantly describes the importance of

WHY:

To your good health!
