Support Equals Success
The environments in which we spend our daily lives greatly influence our overall health and success with weight loss efforts. Conversely, our surroundings can also sabotage us.
If you’ve embarked on a health improvement journey, you boost your likelihood of success when you empower the people in your personal environment to be supportive.
Here are three practical suggestions:
1. Food shopping
If you’re not responsible for your household’s food shopping, at least get involved in meal planning and shopping list dev
elopment. Ask your support person to avoid having foods at home that tend to be triggers for you. Be specific about what those triggers are. Make compromises if needed such as keeping trigger foods out of sight and mind and ensuring fresh, whole foods are plentiful and in-sight.
2. Prioritizing physical activity
Ask friends to join you in regular walks or bike rides. Lead work meetings while walking instead of sitting. Make time with your significant other center on physical activities and you may find that being active can become a new shared hobby.
3. Staying accountable
Share your health goals and action steps with supportive friends and family and they can help you stay accountable on achieving them. “I’m planning to get up early tomorrow and may need your help if I’m repeatedly hitting the snooze alarm,” is an example. Or “I’m aiming to drop a pound this week. Would you check-in with me about it at the end of the week about how I’m progressing toward my goal?”
Most people will want to be supportive of health improvement efforts, but this can require pointed conversations. Be clear about what support feels like to you and your environment will be more likely to encourage your success rather sabotage your efforts.
To your good health!
